Multifunctional clothing

Every human being needs clothes, just like food. fashion and clothing have become a major part of human lives and the field has a huge history. But with the rapid technological advancements, now we have to think about the next step of clothing.

The history of fashion and clothing spans centuries and is a fascinating reflection of social, cultural, and economic changes over time. The major and primary reason for wearing clothes is to cover our bodies.

Clothes are fundamental to human civilisation, evolving from simple functional coverings to intricate cultural and artistic expressions. Clothes not only protect us from the environment but also reflect social status, identity, beliefs, and technology.

As mentioned before, technology is a key factor in the evolution of fashion and clothing. Living in the 21st century, we all know how much technology has advanced in recent history, specially from 1900 to the present day. But still, we are putting so much technology into manufacturing clothes and designing fashion.

So, there is a big gap. We must implement the technology into the clothes, not only for designing them. For example, if we watch a Sci-fi movie, we can see futuristic clothes with multifunctional abilities. We can design multifunctional clothes with the present technology actually.

Case scenario 1 :

We have heat jackets that can generate heat by transforming electric energy into heat. but all of these jackets are manually operated. We can design more advanced self-heating jackets powered by technologies such as AI.

Case scenario 2 :

there are nearly 200 million heart patients living in the world. So, it is important to monitor their heart rates and related vital signs 24/7 and immediately perform actions such as alerts and emergency calls to relevant authorities. This can help to save many lives. Even though we have smart devices now such as smartphones and watches, we need more accurate and simple methods for this. Designing a tech gear that can perform better and monitor heart and related vital signs will be much more beneficial than other tech gadgets.

These are only two examples. Just like that, we can design many multifunctional clothes based on different use cases including fire-fighting uniforms, security uniforms, law enforcement uniforms, patient wearables, workout gear, hiking and other activity gear, athlete gear etc.

We can clearly see now that there is a huge potential for this new field of fashion where technology and fashion combine to make better and more useful clothes. I will finish this article with a quote from the 2008 movie ‘The Dark Knight’ and I can genuinely say that it was one of the inspirations for this project. The quote was from Bruce Wayne himself to Lucious Fox when he needed a new bat suit.

“It is not about fashion Mr. Fox, so much as function. “
